Convert a Cheap Tube Preamp Into A Headphone Amp With Jenny
1 min read
Summary
Jenny List has built a cheap and accessible valve (AKA tube) headphone amplifier using an off-the-shelf $10 kit made with two 6J1 Chinese pentode valves, and altered to make it suitable for headphones.
The kit can be used as a pre-amplifier as it stands, but to make it into a headphone amp it requires a few additional components.
These include a cheap transformer and some passive components, with future modifications using a MOSFET follower to enhance the sound.
Whilst the transformer isn’t perfect, it is a good place for audiophiles on a budget to start tinkering.
Tube amplifiers are stylish and trendy at the moment, but they are expensive as they are typically targeted at the audiophile market.
This modified kit provides an inexpensive entry-point into this market.
