A desk phone running Linux has had Doom stripped out and replaced with the game, which can be played using the keypad, speaker and microphone.
Hacker Parker Reed used a C programme and an Xorg config snippet to map all the buttons, creating a Doom-compatible input device, and has made the details available on GitHub.
This is the second time a CaptionCall device has been used to run Doom, after it was previously patched out, and root was recovered through firmware dumping and hashcat.
The hack was carried out in sequence on the exploitee.rs Discord server, with community members debating whether Doom should remain the go-to for such hacks, or whether other games should be used.
