The AY-3-8910 chip was used in many computers from the 1970s and 1980s, including the ZX Spectrum, and in various arcade games and gaming consoles, with many of these devices using the chip for sound purposes.
However, InazumaDenki has been experimenting with the chip and has managed to get it to produce speech, therefore revisiting and repurposing this old technology in a novel way.
The chip was produced by General Instruments, which initially started making PIC microcontrollers, and later moved on to produce other speech chips that have been since emulated with more modern technology, such as the Raspberry Pi Pico.
It is likely that InazumaDenki will produce more content on the AY-3-8910 chip in the near future, building upon their recent work and experimentation with this obsolete, yet clearly still interesting, technology.
