A YouTuber has modded an old LCD TV to give it better contrast, by replacing its backlight with a projector.
LCD screens have polarising filters in front of a backlight to produce images, but this means that black pixels allow some light through, rather than blocking it completely.
The modification involves removing the backlight and placing a DLP (digital light processing) projector behind the screen, with a high-contrast image, or “luminance map”, projected onto it.
There are other hacks that involve placing LCD screens in front of a modified projector, but this is more compact and achieves better results, with deep blacks and no “halo” effect around bright spots.
