Open Safety In The Auto Business: Renault Shares Its Battery Fire Suppression Tech
1 min read
Summary
Renault has come up with an “open source” way to tackle the problem of battery fires in electric vehicles, which can start if a lithium-ion battery is compromised.
It has developed the Fireman Access Port, which provides a connection for fire crews to attach a hose to the battery pack, allowing them to douse the fire at its source.
The port is covered by an adhesive disk that breaks under pressure, allowing water to access the battery and halt any thermal runaway.
Renault has made the innovation – which it classifies as “open innovation” – free for any other manufacturer to use or enhance, on the proviso they share the subsequent advancements with the community.
Past projects from Renault include an entirely open-sourced electric vehicle.
