An article making claims about the “restoration” of the “King’s English” has been widely regarded as an April Fool’s Day prank three days early.
The piece champions a BritCSS project, purporting to allow users to write in “proper spelling”, with instances of US spellings including “center” and “color” automatically corrected to UK favourites “centre” and “colour”.
It further asserts that harsh instructions in coding such as the “!important” tag could be replaced with more polite versions.
While many have recognised the article as a joke, some have argued that US and UK spellings and dialects should not be regarded as either/or, but as evolving language standards that have converged organically.
