Lithium batteries have enabled a new era of portable electronics, but at what cost?
Some lament the proliferation of bespoke lithium batteries in everything from flashlights to vapes, arguing in favor of standardized, cylindrical lithium cells (such as 18650s) which can be easily replaced and reused.
Others argue in favor of standardized, rechargeable AA and AAA batteries, noting that even lithium batteries designed for single use contain harmful chemicals which may not be easily recycled.
In either case, it is clear that more comprehensive battery recycling and disposal infrastructure is required to handle the massive number of batteries sold each year.
Also, there is disagreement on whether NiMH or Li-Ion batteries are the best rechargeable solution, with self-discharge and capacity issues cited for NiMH, and thermal runaway and safety issues cited for Li-Ion.
