Photo-printing kiosks were everywhere until the widespread adoption of personal photo printers and smartphones, but their inner workings remain a mystery to many.
YouTuber Snappiness bought one of the oldshots and took it apart to reveal a Sun computer, a film scanner, and a Kodak monitor, now defunct.
Unfortunately, the touchscreen was broken, and the onboard battery needed to be changed every time the machine was booted, and the monitor was no longer in production, much to Snappiness’ dismay.
However, they found a modern Elo monitor that did the trick, and the find encouraged Snappiness to reflect on Kodak’s miss management of the burgeoning digital photography market.
The video is a fascinating glimpse into obsolete technology and a reminder of the rapid pace of technological change.
