YouTuber Mr Carlson has created a video which shows how he managed to restore the audio from a hair-thin stainless steel wire, an even older method of recording audio than magnetic tape.
The technology of wire recorders was also featured in the 1960s TV series Hogan’s Heroes, with a custom-built wire recorder used by POWs to smuggle audio messages.
The video shows Carlson using several vintage wire recorders to successful retrieve audio from a reel of such wire, with the audio being of surprisingly good quality.
This shows the difficulty of retrieving audio from older methods of recording, and by extension the difficulty there will be in retrieving information from modern media in the future.
