Instructable user Ruth Amos spent $78 000 on a full-body LED bed for light therapy but has now built her own cheaper versions to obtain the same benefits.
She made a face mask using a welding mask and an array of cheap red LED strips that sit at the correct wavelength for skin treatment.
She also made a tracksuit with sewn-in LED strips to get full-body coverage, albeit not as comfortably.
Light therapy itself has been the subject of several studies, with red LED light demonstrating positive effects on skin, including increased collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid production.
This suggests benefits such as improved skin texture and reduced wrinkles, supporting the use of the treatment in both clinical and cosmetic dermatology.
This latest hack is one of several DIY attempts at the therapy, with others including a similar ‘mask’ for treating Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
