Chemistry Meets Mechatronics in This Engaging Art Piece

Summary
Nathalie Gebert has created a kinetic art piece called Anthofluid which uses a purple liquid made with red cabbage juice as a pH indicator to create tendrils of red and green as the fluid moves.
The medium is filled with an array of electrodes, and a random selection of these is chosen by a pair of conductors to create a variance in the pH level of the solution in the chamber, changing it from purple to green and red.
The colours created are a result of the oxidation and reduction reactions occurring at the positive and negative electrodes within the solution.
The artist has also created another art piece which builds up images on screens made from moving threads.
