Summary

  • The Etch A Sketch is a classic toys with a frame which uses aluminium powder to create drawings when the internal stylus is controlled with two knobs for horizontal and vertical movement.
  • Now a modern twist has been put on the 1960s toy with the Tilt-A-Sketch, which substitutes the aluminium powder with an LED matrix, and the stylus and knobs with an inertial measurement unit.
  • This allows the user to tilt the device in the desired direction and a microcontroller then lights up a series of LEDs to create the image.
  • This version was built by devitoal as part of an art installation, and preserves the functionality of the classic Etch-a-Sketch toys to allow users to create their own art.
