ReactOS is an open-source operating system (OS) that is still in development and designed to be binary compatible with Microsoft Windows software.
Recently the project released a major new update, ReactOS 0.4.15, which adds new features and improvements such as enhanced plug-and-play support, new input methods, and improved compatibility with Windows.
Among the features still being developed are support for DirectX 12 and graphics processing unit (GPU) drivers, which will make the OS a more viable option for gaming.
Currently, many users are sticking with older Windows versions because they prefer its stability and features, and because later releases of Windows have increasingly limited what users can do with their local installations.
ReactOS could present an attractive alternative for those users, especially if it offers the prospect of running the same applications without the permission issues and data collection associated with Windows.
