nostalgics wanting to listen to their old CDs on modern speakers may struggle, so Chad Boughton decided to build a compact player with a Raspberry Pi at its heart that could connect to his fancy Klipsch speaker.
To do this, he removed the USB and Ethernet ports from a Raspberry Pi 3 to make it fit into a 3D-printed frame, and then soldered the appropriate cables directly to the Pi.
The speaker shows up as a USB audio device, so he installed VLC for CD playback, and hooked up an IR receiver to the Pi’s GPIO pins to use the speaker’s original remote to control the device.
Despite the CD celebrating its 40th birthday this year, such physical media is unlikely to disappear any time soon, especially as inventive ways of playing CDs continue to be developed.
