DIY machinery builder Jeremy has created a unique linear stepper motor, a motor format not often seen in everyday life.
Operating as a gearless and quiet linear actuator, it works by sliding a cylindrical section containing permanent magnets through the centre of a row of coils, depending on how these coils are energised.
He started the project as an experiment to create a quiet, gearless actuator, and through researching and iterating on the original concept, he developed it into the tubular linear stepper motor.
While there is limited information on creating a linear stepper motor from scratch, Jeremy persevered, using his knowledge to figure out the optimal coil design, magnet spacing and orientation.
