A UK-based engineer called Malcolm Messiter has developed his own radio control (RC) setup to overcome what he calls the “faceless corporation” aspect of dominant proprietary systems.
He used the Teensy 4.1 microcontroller, an open-source alternative to Arduino, to create a 3D-printed transmitter and receiver for his DIY RC system, called LockDownRadioControl.
Messiter added a game of Pong to amuse the user and included an extensive library of sound effects, with premium FrSky radio modules used externally.
Although there are existing open-source options for RC gear, such as OpenTX and ExpressLRS, Messiter’s customisation means he has been able to build his ideal setup from scratch and therefore gain a deeper understanding of its workings.
