Summary

  • The Pluto radio, despite being relatively unknown when compared to RTLSDR dongles, works well as a spectrum analyser, scanning from 100 MHz up to 6 GHz.
  • It works well due to its lock-in amplifier technique, and whilst 100 MHz may seem like a limited range, there is lots of activity in that spectrum, including WiFi, Bluetooth, amateur and commercial radio, and mobile phones.
  • It can be used as a network adapter, and has been used previously for other applications, including a previous Hackaday article.
  • The drawback lies in the price, which is much higher than RTLSDR dongles.
