In the 1980s, the UNIVAC computer was an integral part of the EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow) Disney attraction, providing a futuristic vision of computing.
The UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer) was developed in the 1950s and was one of the first mass-produced computers.
It found particular success in the finance sector for stock market analysis and airline reservations.
Despite many schools having the UNIVAC 1100-series, it is less well-known than other computers of the era such as the IBM 360.
The relationship with Disney was used for promotional purposes, including making the computer visible as part of the EPCOT attraction and employing the Pepper’s Ghost illusion.
The UNIVAC formed the basis of modern UNISYS computers following several mergers of the Sperry corporation from the 1960s onwards.
