A team of programmers and hackers are attempting to keep obsolete computers running in the face of evolving technology, and have now managed to adapt a modern keyboard for use with a Commodore 64.
While preserving the visual and tactile aspects of the 1980s computer, the additions of modern functionality are also key to the project.
This includes a 3D-printed plate to fit where the original keyboard was housed in the casement, modern key switches and a modified layout to accommodate the unique keys of the C64, including a latching shift key.
The original Commodore key caps are still in use, so minor adaptations were also necessary to accommodate the new switches.
This isn’t the first attempt to breathe new life into legacy devices, with a 2014 hack demonstrating how to use an original C64 keyboard with a modern machine via USB.
