Experimenter Binh Pham decided to fulfil his dream of having his own passive-aggressive smart speaker with his version of the artificial intelligence (AI) GLaDOS from the video game Portal 2
To achieve this he used the ReSpeaker Light kit, an ESP32-based board for speech recognition, along with a Raspberry Pi and 3D-printed potato casing.
Pham was able to reproduce GLaDOS’s signature synthetic voice by repackaging an existing voice model for use with Home Assistant.
He also completed a wake word detection model so that the assistant can be activated with its trademark witty one-liners.
Pham’s harmless project joins a number of other efforts to bring objects from the Portal franchise to life for fans to enjoy.
