A blacksmithing YouTube channel called Black Bear Forge has uploaded a video examining various budget anvil options for those new to the profession.
These include a sledgehammer, a rail anvil and a couple of broken old anvils alongside a Vevor anvil, which is a cheap anvil that shows the flaws and rough parts often found in these budget items.
While it could serve as a starter anvil, there are obvious limitations to these budget items, hence their nickname, ‘anvil-shaped objects’.
Another expert on anvils is reportedly Wile E. Coyote, who used them in many of his contraptions when trying to catch the Road Runner.
One way to make anvils cheaper is to harvest them from rail spurs, although this can be difficult to do safely and legally.
