An open-source digital mobile radio (DMR) modem has been created by QRadioLink, using a LimeSDR software-defined radio, GNU Radio and open-source Codec2 software for converting speech to digital.
While other DMR projects such as OpenRTX exist, QRadioLink’s is a proof of concept and reuses MMDVMHost code for the data link layer, and it is the only DMR transmitter currently using the entirely open-source Codec2 software rather than AMBE hardware or mbelib codec.
Codec2 is also used in M17 and the new open-source RADEV1 mode could prove an AMBE killer, providing a much more accessible alternative for digital radio conversions.
