Rockbox, the open-source firmware for digital media players, has released a new version, the first in eight years, aimed at rejuvenating the MP3 player market.
Dedicated MP3 players have become less popular with the advent of smartphones, which offer a single device for all purposes.
Rockbox contributor Solomon Peachy recommended the Aigo Eros Q/K as the only currently manufactured and sold player compatible with the new firmware.
Users who wish to buy compatible hardware will have to resort to second-hand sources such as eBay.
The firmware could offer a way of rejuvenating old MP3 players, providing a longer battery life and more features than many smartphones.
