Kitmaker and blogger, Mads Chr. Olesen, has detailed on his website how he managed to double the RAM on an Olimex A20-OLinuXino-LIME2 single-board computer from 1GB to 2GB.
The computer’s RAM is soldered to the board and is not removable, so in order to swap out the RAM chips, Olesen required the difficult technique of BGA soldering to complete the task.
After mastering the BGA soldering, he was then able to successfully install the two new RAM chips and boot up the LIME2 to find he had doubled its RAM to 2GB.
soldering is not a new job for hackers but one which requires patience and a very steady hand, as well as a lot of learning through initial mistakes before getting right.
for those who would like to know more there are many other BGA soldering projects published online.
