In the 1990s, a popular craze was simple keychain devices that simulated the world of pet care, known as digital pets.
Now, an individual known as ViciousSquid is using a neural network to create a modern take on the classic hobby, in the form of a digital pet squid named Dosidicus.
The Hebbian learning algorithm enables the pet to form memories and adapt to different circumstances, with the aim to eventually implement a management system to track behaviour variables and decisions.
The open-source project is available on GitHub for users to experiment with and requires a Rasperry Pi to run.
A previous version of the story of 90s nostalgia which centred on the release of an emulator for Tamagotchis using modern microcontroller platforms received international media coverage.
