Summary

  • French digital artist David Revoy recently needed to monitor his cat Geuloush’s heart rate, and found it difficult to do so using traditional palpation.
  • In order to more accurately measure the cat’s pulse rate, Revoy purchased a cheap stethoscope and a basic lavalier USB microphone, and fashioned them together.
  • By cutting the silicone tubing from the stethoscope head and inserting the microphone, Revoy was able to amplify and record the sound, which he could then visualise in an audio editor for analysis.
  • While it would not be difficult to build a small counter using a microcontroller to tally the pulses, Revoy found that his keyboard made a good attraction for his feline friend.
