Matthias has developed an audio-visual presentation reliant on two analogue cables and a Commodore 64 (C64) computer.
In an ‘accidental’ move, many C64 users connected the cables to the wrong ports when first setting up the machine.
Matthias aimed to achieve this mishap on purpose to produce video with audio hardware, and vice versa.
It proved simple to generate audio from the video hardware, due to the rapid operations of the chips involved.
Generating video from audio hardware was trickier, owing to a less performative register, but still feasible for basic large text and other features.
Demos can be written for the setup, though loading them takes so long that audio has to be ‘bit-banged’ throughout.
This retro project reveals a deep understanding of the C64’s capabilities, also showcased in other demos such as Linus Akesson’s ‘A Mind is Born’ (written in 256 bytes).
