Slate, an American pickup truck manufacturer, has designed a DIY repairable and customisable electric truck which is expected to cost $20,000 once American federal tax incentives have been applied.
The vehicle, which can fit a sheet of plywood in its bed, will be available in one colour, grey, and will feature no infotainment system or touchscreen, instead having physical controls for the heating.
The truck’s bodywork is made from injection-moulded plastic panels, like an old Saturn coupe, making painting unnecessary.
Customers will be able to buy bolt-on kits to convert the pickup into an SUV, and the company is considering an app, ‘Slate University’, to teach owners automobile maintenance.
The vehicle is still under development but the company is accepting pre-orders for $50 on its website.
