In the early 2000s, remotes for TVs came with smart capabilities to turn on various devices with one button, but this convenience has since been replaced by devices turning on automatically and switching inputs.
Dillan Stock had a home assistant setup for his devices, and so created his own remote using an ESP32 board running ESPHome, allowing for phone or voice assistant control.
The design process was key to the project and Stock had to consider button layout and how the remote case would be put together.
This isn’t Stock’s first ESP32 project, having previously used the versatile dev board to revamp a smart lamp.
The remote is a missed opportunity for chording or joystick-based text input, but the design files are still available for anyone wanting to give it a go.
