Davis Dewitt has created a remote-controlled ‘robot’ star for an upcoming movie, The Lightning Code, using practical effects rather than computer-generated imagery (CGI).
The robot is controlled by an Arduino Nano, with many servos and a COTS airplane R/C controller, all powered by li-po batteries, and is contained in a weathered 3D-printed body.
The robot doubles as a stunt double, with identical weathering to the main robot, to allow for more realistic action scenes.
Practical effects are becoming less common than computer-generated imagery, so this is a good example of using modern technology to reinvent old techniques.
