A blogger has looked into why wireless USB technologies never took off, and why rival wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi have taken its place.
Technologies such as wireless USB were hampered by competing standards from the off, with Intel and Texas Instruments pushing their multiband orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing, while Motorola, HP and others supported direct sequence ultra-wideband.
The blogger details the confusing array of incompatible products that were the result of these competing standards, and how improvements in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth have rendered them obsolete.
However, the blogger notes that it is still possible to use USB over Wi-Fi, providing an alternative to the array of different cables if required.
