Retro computing enthusiast Rick Norcross has posted details of a modern PC build that is a perfect replica of Apple’s iconic iMac G3.
The project uses a 15-inch ELO LCD panel in place of the original CRT, with an M-ATX motherboard and a 140 mm case fan for cooling.
The PC is also equipped with an Adafruit FX board, which provides a boot-up chime similar to the original iMac.
The project, which is the subject of a longer video on Norcross’ YouTube channel, is partly a preservation exercise, meant to remind people of what computing was like in the days of CRT monitors and before the ubiquity of smartphones.
-Norcross acknowledges that the project is controversial, given the debate over the value of preserving retro hardware.
Similarly mods have been carried out on other retro hardware, such as a Mac Classic and a G4 iMac.
