Maker Mac70 has created a chess table that recreates the ‘holochess’ scene from the first Star Wars movie, using a plate that makes it appear that the pieces are hovering above the surface.
The table uses six SPI displays, driven by an Arduino Giga, positioned and angled to project each chess piece in the game.
Two of the displays are placed on 3D-printed gantries and are able to move, allowing two creatures to battle in the centre of the table.
While it does not replicate the scene perfectly, from the right angle it does look impressively authentic.
This is not the first time Maker Mac70 has created floating display technology; last year they made a similar floating display, and they have also made a volumetric display that plays Doom.
