According to Hackaday, a Reddit user has developed a handheld LED flashlight that can illuminate a distance of up to 48 kilometres.
The device produces 100,000 lumens and 20,000,000 candelas, with a $2,000 price tag.
It is made up of 48 white LEDs in a 16S3P configuration, and is powered by 20S2P battery pack, drawing 1.2 kW and therefore requiring an array of heatsinks and five cooling fans to deal with the resulting temperature.
Commenters on the article question the credibility of the claim, comparing it to wildly inflated specifications on items sold on Amazon and AliExpress.
One reader suggests that the motivation for creating it lay less in practicality, and more in achieving the longest range possible.
