YouTuber I Build Stuff attempted to create a self-landing payload that would be released from a rocket at an altitude of over 1 km and then fly back down to the launch point.
The device is a first-person view (FPV) drone with small brushless motors, running on Betaflight firmware.
Though the device was successful, human error meant that the drone was manually recovered, rather than landing via autonomous flight.
This is in part due to concerns over the legality of an autonomous payload.
The challenge for hackers, meanwhile, could be to send a payload to 100,000 ft via balloon and have it fly back to the launch point.
