Summary
Cameron John Wagenius, who is in the US Army, was arrested last month and charged with two counts of unlawfully transferring confidential phone records.
Wagenius was part of a group that extorted companies over stolen data.
He pleaded guilty to the data transferring charges, but prosecutors want him to remain in custody until he is discharged from the army, citing that he is a flight risk.
According to prosecutors, Wagenius searched for countries that do not have an extradition agreement with the US, as well as asking “can hacking be treason?”
They also found a screenshot on his laptop that suggested he had over 17,000 files, including passports, driver’s licences and identity cards, belonging to victims of a breach.
Wagenius is currently waiting to be discharged from the army, which is expected to happen in March.
