A court filing from US federal agents has revealed that $150m worth of cryptocurrency was stolen from a wallet owned by co-founder of Ripple, Chris Larsen, through password vault service, LastPass.
This conclusion was reached following findings from security researchers at KrebsOnSecurity in September 2023.
These revealed a pattern of similar heists among dozens of victims across the previous year with analysis showing that these all used the same password manager service.
The conclusion of the US Secret Service and FBI is that these crimes were all committed by the same hackers.
While LastPass continues to state there is no definitive proof that these crimes are linked to its 2022 breaches, its continued calls for enhanced security measures suggest this is a strong possibility.
