Summary
A Scottish man, a suspected member of the Scattered Spider cybercrime group, has been extradited to the US from Spain on charges of wire fraud, conspiracy and identity theft.
Tyler Robert Buchanan allegedly hacked into dozens of companies in the US and abroad, and controlled more than $26m in stolen funds.
Scattered Spider is a loosely affiliated group that has targeted some of the world’s largest technology companies, including Twilio, LastPass, DoorDash and Mailchimp.
Buchanan fled the UK in February 2023 after a rival cybercrime group hired thugs to attack him and threatened to burn him unless he gave up his cryptocurrency wallet.
The FBI tied Buchanan to the group after discovering the same username and email address was used to register numerous Okta-themed phishing domains.
Buchanan is being held without bail pending trial.
