Summary
On 12 May a site run by Brian Krebs, a US-based cybersecurity expert, was targeted in a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, which occurred via a newinternet of things (IoT) botnet.
The attack peaked at more than 6.3Tbps, and was approximately 10 times larger than the assault launched in 2016 by the Mirai botnet.
After being hit by the 2016 attack, Krebs was forced to leave the protection of Akamai, the company that had been safeguarding his website.
The most recent attack was easily stopped by Google, which highlighted its new Project Shield infrastructure.
An analysis of the attack revealed that the botnet behind it was Aisuru, which was first spotted in an attack on a gaming platform in 2024.
The authors of the botnet have also been spotted selling DDoS-for-hire services on Telegram.
The individual believed to be behind the scheme claimed that they were not involved and that the business had simply been passed to new owners.
However, they did admit to having worked on, and promoted, the botnet in the past.
