Google has bought cloud security start-up Wiz in a deal reported to be worth $32bn, its largest ever acquisition and one which could face regulatory hurdles.
Wiz provides “agentless” security, offering an interface through which experts can simulate potential threats to a cloud environment.
The deal puts Google Cloud in closer competition with Microsoft and Amazon, whose revenues are more than double that of Google’s.
Google will inherit a patent infringement lawsuit which Wiz is facing from cloud cybersecurity company Orca.
The deal may also face scrutiny from federal regulators; Google is in the middle of an antitrust trial and is already facing antitrust accusations regarding its purchase of FitBit.
