Summary
General Tim Haugh, director of the National Security Agency (NSA) and US Cyber Command, was fired on 3 April, according to reports.
His removal came a day after right-wing activist Laura Loomer met with President Donald Trump, reportedly to discuss Haugh’s dismissal.
Loomer claimed that Haugh and NSA deputy leader Wendy Noble were “disloyal to President Trump” and said Haugh – who was nominated by Biden – had been “hand picked” by General Mark Miley, who often clashed with Trump.
Democrats on the Intelligence Committee criticised the ousting, with Senator Mark Warner calling it “astonishing”.
Lieutenant General William J. Hartman, who served as Cyber Command Deputy, has been named the acting director of the NSA.
