GitHub’s Deepfake Porn Crackdown Still Isn’t Working
1 min read
Summary
A fake porn video that used a deepfake of TikTok star Charli D’Amelio without her consent received more than 8,200 views.
The video was uploaded to the world’s largest website for deepfake porn.
After the site introduced rules to prevent such non-consensual images in August 2024, the platform disabled the program, but it could subsequently be accessed in an archived format, where users could still access the code.
An investigation found more than a dozen GitHub projects linked to deepfake porn videos that were evading detection, thereby extending access to code used for intimate image abuse.
Other videos on the site featured the faces of celebrities such as Emma Watson and Anya Taylor-Joy in sexual situations.
The code for such deepfake programs can still be copied and used elsewhere on the web.
While GitHub has disabled several relevant repositories, others have popped up on the platform, including some with near-identical branding or clear descriptors as “NSFW,” “unlocked,” or “bypasses.
