Gamaredon: The Turncoat Spies Relentlessly Hacking Ukraine
1 min read
Summary
Russia’s Gamaredon (Armageddon) cyber espionage group is eclipsing its more illustrious Sandworm and Turla rivals in its ability to penetrate Ukrainian organisations, according to cyber security researchers from Slovakian firm ESET.
Indeed, Gamaredon’s ability to churn out a relentless stream of simple but effective spearphishing and malware attacks, day-in-day-out, has led some to label the group as the top espionage threat to Ukraine.
The group, based in Crimea, is alleged to have been comprised of hackers who previously worked for the Ukrainian SBU security services before switching allegiance to the Russian FSB following the Russian annexation of the peninsula in 2014.
ESET highlights the sheer volume of attacks combined with a propensity to constantly evolve its malware and a disregard for the exhaustion this causes cyber security defenders as being key to the group’s effectiveness.
