CyberAv3ngers: The Iranian Saboteurs Hacking Water and Gas Systems Worldwide
1 min read
Summary
A cyberwar between Israel and Iran has been ongoing for several years, but a new player has emerged in the form of CyberAv3ngers, which is associated with the Iranian government.
CyberAv3ngers initially aimed its efforts at Israel and Israeli technology products, but has since branched out to include targets including a US oil and gas firm as well as critical infrastructure around the world.
The group has been reportedly involved in cyber-sabotage, including rewriting the code of more than 100 devices sold by Israeli firm Unitronics, used in water utilities and wastewater plants, to disrupt services.
Consequently, US officials have placed a $10m bounty on the group and the US Treasury has sanctioned six officials linked to the organisation.
CyberAv3ngers’ apparent objective is to gain the ability to disrupt infrastructure at will, and it appears to be stepping up its activities.
