Millions of Apple Airplay-Enabled Devices Can Be Hacked via Wi-Fi

Summary
Security researchers at Oligo have discovered a number of vulnerabilities in Apple’s AirPlay protocol, which enables iPhones and MacBooks to play media on other devices.
Known as AirBorne, the flaw potentially affects all AirPlay-enabled devices, such as speakers, set-top boxes and TVs, and could allow hackers to take control of the device if they are on the same Wi-Fi network.
Oligo’s CTO estimates that there are potentially tens of millions of third-party devices that are vulnerable to the issue, with many likely to remain unpatched due to the scale and variety of devices involved.
The issue also affects CarPlay, Apple’s in-car dashboard interface, although Oligo noted that cars would be harder to hack given the need for a Bluetooth or USB connection.
Apple has reportedly issued patches for some devices and says that others are only vulnerable in certain circumstances.
