Summary
According to allegations, the director of national intelligence used the same simple password for a variety of personal internet accounts, putting confidential information at risk.
Leaked records seen by Wired magazine suggest that the official, Tulsi Gabbard, used a “Companion” password for accounts including Gmail, Dropbox, and LinkedIn.
It is advisable to use a password manager to generate complex, unique passwords for each account, however, experts in cybersecurity are concerned that many people continue to reuse passwords across multiple platforms.
Gabbard’s spokesperson refuted the claims, but the disclosure comes soon after Gabbard was involved in a Signal group chat controversy, where sensitive information was shared in a message with an unintended recipient.
The allegations have also been vehemently denied by Gabbard’s deputy chief of staff.
