Summary
United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have revealed plans to monitor all exiting traffic at US crossings and match passengers’ faces to their travel documents, in order to obtain data on self-deportations.
In a move which echoes CBP’s monitoring of incoming travelers, the agency is seeking to obtain accurate statistics in relation to voluntary exits, which the Trump administration is encouraging.
CBP’s existing program, which matches photos of those coming into the US with travel documents, will be mirrored for those leaving, according to CBP spokesperson Jessica Turner.
The new system could also integrate with ImmigrationOS, a new tool created by software company Palantir for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), worth $30m.
The tool gives the agency “near real-time visibility” on self-deportations, and it is unclear whether data from CBP’s new system will be incorporated into this.
