Synology is tightening restrictions on third-party NAS hard drives

Summary
In an announcement on its EU website, Synology confirmed that from 2025 only company-branded drives or those that have been certified to its specifications will offer “the full range of features and support” on its future Plus series NAS models.
The move will help to “increase system reliability and performance” by reducing compatibility issues, according to the company.
Drives that are not approved by Synology will not output their full potential, meaning features such as storage pooling will be unavailable.
However, the changes will not impact existing users, with the new restrictions only applying to devices released from 2025 onwards.
