Data breach hitting PowerSchool looks very, very bad

Summary
A major data breach at US-based PowerSchool, which provides cloud-based software to schools, has affected millions of students and school staff.
The company revealed on 7 January that its systems had been compromised in a cyber attack two weeks earlier, with “unauthorised exportation of personal information” taken from its Student Information System.
The information stolen included names, contact details, dates of birth, medical records and social security numbers.
Since then, schools across the US and Canada have notified their communities of the scope of the breach, with some detailing near exhaustive lists of the type of information compromised.
Toronto District School Board, for example, stated that the data theft included “discipline notes” and “EQAO accommodation information”.
