Massive botnet that appeared overnight is delivering record-size DDoSes

Summary
Nokia’s Deepfield Emergency Response Team has discovered a newly-formed botnet, named Eleven11bot, which comprises approximately 30,000 webcams and video recorders, the largest number of which are based in the US.
The botnet has been launching what is thought to be the largest denial-of-service (DoS) attack seen to date.
While the largest number of devices involved in a botnet was recorded in 2016 at 145,000, the discovery of a botnet involving 30,000 devices is significant as it appears to have come out of nowhere, and the volume of data it is able to target at victims is breaking records.
The largest recorded attack was in February this year, peaking at 6.5 terabits per second; the previous record, set in 2024, was 5.6Tbps.
TheEleven11bot targets a range of sectors, with communications service providers and gaming hosting infrastructure deemed particularly vulnerable.
In some cases, the volume of data is used to swamp the target, while in others, the sheer number of data packets delivered at a rate of hundreds of millions per second can bring down a victim’s network.
